Nowdays, only well-equipped 4x4 vehicles can take us to some of the gems of estate art of Catherine the Great era, scattered around Torzhok. This ancient town used to be the outpost of Novgorod Republic and afterwards the most important station between the two capitals of the 9th century. We will walk the grounds of the oldest monastery of Russia and follow Alexander Pushkin’s advice and try the legendary Pozharsky chicken meatballs.
Itinerary:
Day 1: We leave Moscow at 9 a.m. and take New Riga highway to reach our first stop - Joseph-Volokolamsk Monastery, once the richest cloister of Russia and the stronghold of Josephinians during their dispute with non-possessors. After a lunch break in Tver, the tragic pages of the history of the 20th century will reveal in front of us in Mednoye village where we will visit the memorial cemetery of Stalin’s regime victims. Znamenskoye-Rayok – the first architectual masterpiece of Nikolay Lvov will introduce you to the genius of this 18th centrury Russian “Leonardo”. The remainder of the day is spent following the ancient trade route along Tvertsa river, where we encounter unique old stone bridges. For a perfect day ending, a small hospitable hotel in Torzhok with great dinner is waiting for us around 9 p.m.
Day 2: In the morning we will take a walk around central Torzhok and visit the St. Boris and Gleb Monastery. Next, we will drive to Vasilevo, an open-air museum of wooden churches and houses, where rare samples of this traditional Russian craft are collected. The miraculous Devil’s bridge and other Nikolay Lvov’s chef-d'oeuvres in Nikolskoye, Arpachyovo and Pereslegino impress all visitors. In the evening we will drive back taking Leningrad highway and passing through Emmaus, Zavidovo, Klin and other remarkable small towns. Finally, we will arrive back in Moscow around 10p.m.
